Aruba, formerly a part of the Netherlands Antilles, achieved on Jan. 01, 1986 a special status, “status aparte” was the third state under the Dutch crown, together with the Netherlands and the remaining five islands of the Netherlands Antilles. On Dec. 15, 1954 the Netherlands Antilles were given complete domestic autonomy and granted equality within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The separate constitution put in place for Aruba in 1986 established it as an autonomous government within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In 1990 Aruba opted to remain a part of the Kingdom without the promise of future independence. The second largest island of the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba is situated near the Venezuelan coast. The island has an area of 74-1/2 sq. mi. (193 sq. km.). Capital: Oranjestad (1780-1824 Paardenbaai; 1636-1780 Commandeursbaai), named after the Dutch royal family. Aruba was important in the processing and transportation of petroleum products in the first part of the twentieth century, but today the chief industry is tourism.
Aruba is now one of the four constituent countries that form the Kingdom of the Netherlands, along with the Netherlands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten. The citizens of these countries all share a single nationality: Dutch. Aruba has no administrative subdivisions, but, for census purposes, is divided into eight regions. Capital: Oranjestad (1780-1824 Paardenbaai; 1636-1780 Commandeursbaai). National Anthem: Aruba Dushi Tera (Aruba, Precious Country).

Currency: Aruba Florin (AWG) = 100 cents.
The Florin is the currency of Aruba. It is subdivided into 100 cents. The Florin was introduced on January 01, 1986, replacing the Netherlands Antillean guilder at par. The currency has maintained the peg inherited from the gulden of 1.79 Florin per 1 US Dollar. Due to this fact, and also because of a growing amount of American tourism, US Dollars are often used as the de facto currency instead of Aruban Florins at many businesses, especially in the hotel and resort areas of the island.
In 1986, coins were introduced in denominations of 5, 10, 25 and 50 cents, 1 and 2½ Florin. Later, the 5 Florin note was replaced by a square coin and the 2½ Florin coin was discontinued in 1995. 2½ Florin coin is produced since 1996 in Proof sets only. The 5 florin was later on in 2005 replaced with a round golden coin. All coins are struck in nickel-bonded steel with exception of the 5 florin, which is an alloy of copper and other metals. The 50 cent is the only square-shaped coin remains. 1 cent coin is known as Sen, 2½ cent as Plaka, 5 cents as Locha (Stuiver), 10 cents as Dubbeltje (Depchi), 25 cents as Kwartje (Dies Plaka), 50 cents as Yotin (Groot Stuiver) and 2½ Florin as Fuerte (Rijksdaalder).
Various privy mint marks at the left top side of the emblem, can be seen on these coins in the following years:
  • 1986-1988: anvil.
  • 1989-1999: bow and arrow.
  • 2000: bow and arrow with star.
  • 2001: wine tendril with grapes.
  • 2002: wine tendril with grapes & star.
  • 2003-2016: sails of a clipper.
  • 2016: sails with star.
