Saudi Arabia FAKE 65 Counter Marked
on King: Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman bin Faisal Al-Saud coins.

AH(13)65 [1946 CE] - Countermarked Coinage

70 = 65 Countermark: The following pieces are countermarked examples of earlier types bearing the Arabic numerals 65. They were countermarked in a move to break money changers' monopoly on small coins in AH1365 (1946). These countermarks vary in size and are found with the Arabic numbers raised in a circle. Incuse countermarks are considered a recent fabrication. I came to know that people in Jeddah and else where these days are making 65, Nejd and Hejaz countermarked coins in abundance. They have got these machines from India and using them to produce such coins. Therefore please be careful while purchasing them from Ebay and other resources.
The following are criteria according to my judgment and understanding to considered fake 65 counter marked coins.
  • Criteria A: 65 is not written in circular or plain surface. It has written on irregular shape mostly rectangular.
  • Criteria B: The backside (on which the denomination is mentioned) is not having regular circular pattern or impact.
  • Criteria C:  The coin is acid washed or harshly cleaned to make it doubtful.

Unlisted Krause Publication 65 Countermarked Coinage

Some coin collector believe that probably as new coins came to Saudi Arabia with frozen date AH1356 with reeded edge, they were also countermarked by the legal authorities by mistake. Later these coins are also considered fake ones and easily distinguish by large countermarks on them.
