Jordan Coinage: 1978-1999 part 2/2
under King: Hussein ibn Talal

Currency: Dinar = 10 Dirhams = 100 piastres (qirsh) = 1000 fils
The Jordanian dinar continued to be used in the West Bank along with Israeli currency after Israel took control of it in 1967. During Israel's hyperinflation in the 1970s and 1980s, the Jordanian currency provided stability. Until 1992, coins were denominated in Arabic using fils, qirsh, dirham and dinar but in English only in fils and dinar. Since 1992, the fils and dirham are no longer used in the Arabic denominations and the English denominations are given in dinar and either qirsh or piastres.

AH1412 - 1992 [5th Issue: 1992-1998]
A new, refreshing design was long-overdue when this issue was introduced. The new set of coins completely eliminated the 1 Fils, but all other denominations remained. Additionally, two new high denominations were introduced: the half Dinar and the Dinar coins. An older picture of King Hussein was introduced but facing left. Keep in mind that a Dinar consists of 100 Piastres (or Qirsh), which is equivalent to 1000 Fils. This issue consists of 18 common circulated coins: 1992 (3 coins), 1993 (2 coins), 1994 (1 coin), 1996 (8 coins), 1997 (3 coins), and 1998 (2 coins).
