Yemen Arab Republic (1962-1990)

The Yemen Arab Republic (YAR; Arabic: الجمهورية العربية اليمنية‎‎ al-Jumhūrīyah al-‘Arabīyah al-Yamanīyah), also known as North Yemen or Yemen (Sana'a), was a country from 1962 to 1990 in the northwestern part of what is now Yemen. Capital: Sana'a. It united with the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, commonly known as South Yemen, on May 22, 1990, to form the current Republic of Yemen.
Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 after the Great War, northern Yemen became an independent state as the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen. On 27 September 1962, revolutionaries inspired by the Arab nationalist ideology of United Arab Republic (Egyptian) President Gamal Abdel Nasser deposed the newly crowned King Muhammad al-Badr, took control of Sana'a, and established the Yemen Arab Republic (YAR). This coup d'état marked the beginning of the North Yemen Civil War that pitted YAR troops, assisted by the United Arab Republic (Egypt), against Badr's royalist forces, supported by Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Conflict continued periodically until 1967, when Egyptian troops were withdrawn to join the conflict of the Six-Day War. By 1968, following a final royalist siege of Sana'a, most of the opposing leaders reached a reconciliation. Saudi Arabia recognized the Republic in 1970.
Unlike East and West Germany or North and South Korea, the YAR and its southern neighbor, the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY), also known as South Yemen, remained relatively friendly, though relations were often strained. In 1972 the two nations declared that unification would eventually occur. However, these plans were put on hold in 1979, and war was prevented only by an Arab League intervention. The goal of unity was reaffirmed by the northern and southern heads of state during a summit meeting in Kuwait in March 1979. In May 1988, the YAR and PDRY governments came to an understanding that considerably reduced tensions. They agreed to renew discussions concerning unification, to establish a joint oil exploration area along their undefined border, to demilitarize the border, and to allow Yemenis unrestricted border passage on the basis of a national identification card. Official Yemeni unification took place on May 22, 1990, with a planned, 30-month process, scheduled for completion in November 1992. The first stamp bearing the inscription "Yemen Republic" was issued in October 1990. While government ministries proceeded to merge, both currencies remained valid until 11 June 1996. A civil war in 1994 delayed the completion of the final merger.

  • President
  • Abdullah al-Sallal................................27 Sep 1962 - 05 Nov 1967
  • He was chairman Revolutionary Command Council to 03 Oct 1962. Al-Sallal led the revolutionary forces that deposed King Muhammad al-Badr and brought the Mutawakkalite Kingdom of Yemen to an end. He presided over the newly founded Yemen Arab Republic (YAR), with close ties to Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt which served as the YAR's strongest ally in the war against the Saudi Arabian-backed Mutawakkalite royalists that lasted into 1968. Yemen's President Abdullah al-Sallal negotiated with tribal leaders after the revolution to help cement the republic, he was later ousted in a bloodless coup led by Abdul Rahman Al-Iryani.
  • Chairman Republican Council
  • Abdul Rahman al-Iryani............................05 Nov 1967 - 13 Jun 1974
  • Abdul Rahman Al-Eryani opposed Egyptian and Saudi interference in Yemen affairs and, with two of his colleagues, Ahmed Noaman and Mohamad Al-Zubairi, he led a strong movement against the foreign involvement of Nasser's Egypt in the Yemeni civil war between republicans and royalists. He was held in Egypt with Noaman in 1966 while their partner Al-Zubairi was assassinated earlier. In 1970, he arrived at a national conciliation agreement with the supporters of the royal regime and established a formal relation with Saudi Arabia. In 1972, he reached an agreement with South Yemen for the unification of the two parts of the country, which constituted the basic foundations for the unification of 1990. It was also during his regime that Yemen had parliamentary elections and permanent constitution for the first time. Al-Eryani went into exile in Syria in 1974, where he eventually died in 1998, aged 89.
  • Lieutenant-Colonel Ibrahim Muhammad al-Hamadi....13 Jun 1974 - 13 Jun 1975
  • He was the leader of a military coup d'etat in Yemen Arab Republic that overthrew the regime of President Abdul Rahman al-Iryani on June 13, 1974. After the revolt, he was President of the Military Command Council that governed the country. During his rule, he cemented the central government's control over the country, planned on ending tribal loyalty, and Yemen's medieval social classes by proclaiming all Yemenis as equal. He also improved relations with Saudi Arabia.
  • President
  • Ibrahim Muhammad al-Hamadi (continued)..........13 Jun 1975 - 11 Oct 1977
  • On the first day of his presidency and after a quick review in important topics and crowded agenda, he issued emergency order to stop media campaigns against the South and its leadership with assertion that the unity will remain the only option for the Yemeni people no matter how varied opinions and attitudes, because it is a great goal needs a mighty sacrifice. Immediately President Salim Rubai Ali famous as "Salmeen" reciprocated the same desire and the same sense, setting a strong relationship between two of them which has taken a personal nature more than the official. Al-Hamdi's civil and economic policies helped bring Yemen into the 21st Century by building hundreds of new schools and eleven hospitals countrywide as well as the paving of more than 2,000 roads, He also planned on improving ties with Marxist People's Democratic Republic of Yemen. On October 11, 1977 al-Hamdi was murdered along with his brother by Saudi Arabian funded agents believed to be from the Al-Ahmar tribe, who are known dependents of the Saudi monarchy. Al-Hamdi's murder was never officially investigated. To this day al-Hamdi remains as Yemen's most beloved President.
  • Chairman Presidential Council
  • Major General Ahmad bin Hussein al-Ghashmi.....11 Oct 1977 - 22 Apr 1978
  • President
  • Ahmad bin Hussein al-Ghashmi (continued).......22 Apr 1978 - 24 Jun 1978
Ghashmi himself was assassinated. His assassination occurred when he was meeting an envoy sent by People's Democratic Republic of Yemen by President Salim Rubai Ali and a briefcase, reportedly containing a secret message, exploded, killing both al-Ghashmi and the envoy. It is not conclusively known who set off the explosion. Coincidentally, Rubai Ali died in a coup three days after this event.
  • Chairman Presidential Council
  • Abdul Karim Abdullah al-Arashi.................24 Jun 1978 - 18 Jul 1978
  • He was Vice President of Yemen Arab Republic and speaker of the Constituent People's Assembly from 11 October 1977 to 24 June 1978.
